About the instructors…
Corky Brown, a.k.a. Professor “Rolha”, is an accomplished capoeirista whose passion for learning and helping others to learn has made him a successful instructor, entrepreneur, software engineer, musician, and parent. He’s proud of his many years of experience with developmentally disabled children and adults, and considers teaching to be his one true talent. Corky has been with Mestra Gata Brava since the founding of Capoeira Morro Verde in 2009.
Corky has created many websites to provide the capoeira community with information and tools to help navigate the folkloric art through the digital age. As an amateur linguist, he created the Capoeira Language, an alphabet for transcribing the movements of capoeira. And as a self-taught musician, he now feeds his musical appetite with the deep traditions of capoeira and other Afro-Brazilian arts.
Ariel Jurema Montgomery, a.k.a. Professora Sereia, began her Capoeira journey in 2010 under the guidance of Mestra Gata Brava. Rooted in her Brazilian heritage, she has developed a deep appreciation for Capoeira as both a martial art and a cultural tradition.
As an instructor, she is passionate about creating an inclusive and supportive environment where students of all ages and experience levels can learn and grow together. Her greatest reward is watching students discover their own strength, develop confidence and find a lifelong love and appreciation for the Afro-Brazilian art of Capoeira.
Puneet Rao a.k.a Instrutor Antena, began his capoeira journey unofficially in 2005 at the capoeira club in Stony Brook University. He was officially baptized into the capoeira academy of Mestre Lincoln of Capoeira Angola Palmares in Astoria, Queens, where he trained for 6 years. He lived and studied the art in Salvador, Bahia during this time as well. After his Mestre moved back to Brazil, Puneet reduced his training to care for and raise his family. During this time, he sometimes trained under Mestre Gulliver and Mestre Omi of Capoeira Angola Palmares. After moving to Lambertville in 2020, he began to train under Mestra Gata Brava where he has been since
Puneet is a passionate educator and a parent of a capoeirista. He is also passionate about growing gourds and making art with them!
